Your First Visit

What Can I Expect?

First of all, you can expect to be treated with respect and concern for your health. Your time is valuable, and every effort is made to see you at or very close to your scheduled appointment time. On occasion a patient unexpectedly needing extra attention will cause a short delay, but this is rare. And you can be assured you too will get all the time and attention you deserve!

After the inevitable new patient paperwork you will consult with Dr. Fox. This is your opportunity to express your health concerns and goals, and to ask any questions you may have. You will find that Dr. Fox is a good listener, and will have relevant questions for you as well. While many people come to Georgetown Chiropractic for help following a specific injury like a car accident, fall, work or sports injury, frequently people are unsure what is causing the problem. Your health history and current situation (work and recreational activities, nutritional choices, and emotional status to name a few) often provides key clues to the true nature of your problem and how you can be helped.

A physical exam will be performed to carefully follow-up on possibilities arising from the consultation and also to help rule-out serious problems which may be involved. Standard range of motion evaluation, orthopedic testing, nerve sensation, reflex and muscle strength testing is performed, just like if you went to an orthopedic doctor for the same problem. In addition specific chiropractic evaluation is performed.

Dr. Fox takes pride in performing a thorough chiropractic evaluation. What does this mean to you? First, your posture and movements are observed. Standing, sitting, walking, getting up and down from a chair or exam table all give important information to a trained observer. Chiropractors also rely a great deal on palpation, the skill of touching a patient to get important information. Palpation of the spine, muscles and extremities (arms and legs) gives information that simply can not be provided any other way. Old and new injuries, chronic muscle tension and poor posture all leave their mark on the body and must be palpated to be properly evaluated and treated.

X-rays are not usually required, and when they are you will be referred to a professional radiology facility in the area.

Since most people come to Georgetown Chiropractic for help with neck or back pain, treatment on the first day is designed to provide relief as well as begin the healing process.  Chiropractic adjustment, neuromuscular reeducation and physical therapy modalities such as ultrasound or electrical muscle stimulation are our primary first visit methods. In many instances kinesio tape will be applied to provide additional relief and support throughout the day.

Even first visit adjustments aren't usually painful, and many patients experience immediate relief. Finally, you'll be given some simple and effective instructions on ways to minimize pain and accelerate healing until your follow-up appointment.

Before you go you will have every opportunity to ask Dr. Fox any questions you have regarding your condition and what to expect. Don't forget the three most people want to have answered:

  1. Can you help me?
  2. What can I do to help myself?
  3. How much is it going to cost?
